ALL THE DETAILS - READ ON:
--- THE HOUSE:
Our home is an upper/lower duplex built into the hillside with private entry points; one at street level and one tucked privately around the back (your entry).
The construction of the home was completed the year prior to the great earthquake of 1964 and it rode through it like a champ. In fact, this house became the haven for neighbors whose homes weren’t so lucky (so we were told). Now, while you rest easy with the knowledge of this house’s Earthquake sustainability please don’t judge its quirks too harshly. Where it falls short, it more than makes up for it in mid century modern charm and character.
If you appreciate details, you've come to the right place. When updating and styling we've let the house do its own talking and then added some of our stories collected in pictures and art from travels afar. Our mini library offers some vintage Alaskana editions and our personal collection of Lonely Planet guidebooks is there to inspire your future wanderings. You'll feel the nostalgia looking through our cassette tape collection and playing your favorites on the 80's boom box.
In the bedroom you have space to hang your clothes or fold them away in the dresser. A luxurious KING BED commands the room nicely.
We keep the kitchen stocked with great coffee! Our local roaster, Kaladi, is amazing and you get to be the judge of that yourself using the drip coffee maker or the pour over system. We have sugar and creamers and some tea options for your morning pleasure.
The bathroom has been newly remolded, top to bottom, with custom tile and a shower expansion that boasts TWO shower heads.
The large, open kitchen has everything you need to cook-in or plate and reheat your to-go meals.
--- IMPORTANT THINGS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
- The hot tub is situated on a deck in the back yard with access from both the upper and lower units. It is a shared amenity, however, we consider it personal use on a first come basis.
- We DO NOT have a TV or Dishwasher. We do have great, high speed wifi.
- This is an upper/lower style duplex. You may hear foot traffic if we are home or someone is staying upstairs.
- The fireplace can be used with long burning Duraflame style logs only. One log will be provided for your stay and you can purchase additional logs at local grocery stores.
- This unit does not have access to a washer and dryer, however, there are lots of options locally including a same day pick up and delivery service!
--- THE OUTSIDE:
Our property covers three city lots, an unusual amount of space for this part of town. The yard is expansive and in addition to ornamental and wild foliage, we have apple trees, raspberries and rhubarb plants which you are welcome to help yourself to in season. You won’t see the neighbors or the street as a hillside, trees, green belt and fencing all create incredible privacy.
It really feels like out of city living while still being able to enjoy the benefits of having everything super close by. The Fish Creek Estuary runs right next to us and so does the Fish Creek Trail.
Your front door entry point is completely private. You have full access to the huge yard. You may see us outside playing if we are home, but if we notice you sunbathing out there first, we'll leave you be. You also have a private driveway, carport and patio area. The Hot Tub deck is shared.
Our family works at a remote lodge in another part of Alaska for most of the summer months and travels throughout the winter. You may catch us home for a night here and there, but we are very conscious of our guest's space and privacy. If we notice you are sunbathing in the yard we won't disturb you.
If you are concerned about privacy or the potential for hearing your neighbor please, do not hesitate to reach out to us prior to your arrival.
We are available by text or message if you need anything and the local co-host can come by if something needs attending to.
Nicely settled between Spenard and Turnagain neighborhoods, alongside Fish Creek estuary. It's an older, funky, classic, even refined in some cases, neighborhood. That's beauty of Alaska. Expect blue tarps next-door to mansions. And even mansions with blue tarps... Minutes from the airport, front door access to the city wide trail system and easy walking distance to groceries, cafes, restaurants and all the necessities and frills.
This area is populated with greenbelts, parks, playgrounds, ducks, moose and bears! Oh my!
Anchorage is the closest city to Alaska people like to say. So to get to "Alaska" you'll likely be needing a car, but if you're on either end of an extended trip you could ditch the car and be just fine walking, busing, ubering etc. from here.
For your car, you'll have private off street parking with a carport!
For your feet, you'll have a dynamic city wide trail system literally alongside the front yard. Search: Tony Knowles Coastal Trail as a starting point. We also hope to be able to offer bikes in the future to further enjoy these trails.
$13 über to the airport last we checked.
Grab a cab from the airport for about the same.
